About WHO TURNED ON THE SKY? by Marielle Atanacio:
A girl who enjoys all the wonders of the sky starts to question if someone turns on the sun, the stars, and the moon. She asks the townspeople for help as she begins her trip to find the answer to her question. This playful picture book is a great way to learn about some of the figures of Philippine mythology as a family, and to celebrate the magic and beauty of pre-colonial stories.
About MUNGAN AND HER LOLA by Justine Villanueva:
Mungan and her Lola tells the story of the child Mungan who loves to make her lola smile. One day, Lola is inconsolably sad. Mungan and her family engage in Filipino rituals of care—cooking sabaw, performing hilot, and playing kulintang—to uncover the source of Lola's sadness and find a way to bring back her smile. This story is inspired by the Bukidnon epic which tells the story of Mungan, the Babaylan (Healer) of Bukidnon.
About AMINA AND THE CITY OF FLOWERS by Christina Newhard:
Amina, a young Yakan weaver, is homesick for Basilan, but she finds inspiration for her loom in the diversity and color of her new home, Zamboanga City. "Amina" touches on themes of creativity, diversity, bakwit/internally displaced peoples, and the matriarchal traditions of Philippine weaving.
About LOLO'S SARI-SARI STORE by Sophia N. Lee:
A little girl holds lessons learned in her grandfather's sari-sari store close while adjusting to a new home in this sweet picture book about the joy of community, connection, and Filipino culture.
